How soon can I book my driving theory test?

You can book your theory test as soon as you receive your provisional driving licence. We recommend doing so as quickly as possible!

The cheapest way you can book the theory test is directly through the official gov.uk website. It will cost you £23.

What do I need to book my driving theory test?

To book your driving theory test, you will need the following:

  • Your UK provisional driver’s licence number.
  • Name of the theory test centre you want to take the test at.
  • A debit or credit card to pay the £23 test fee.
  • An email address, where you’ll be sent your theory test booking details.

What if I have a reading difficulty, disability or health condition?

You can book your test in the same way as above. However, you can find more information about the options available to you here.

Can I change the date of my theory test?

You can change the date of your theory test by visiting gov.uk/change-theory-test. You need to give three days’ notice to avoid paying again

Can I cancel my theory test?

To cancel your theory test, simply head to gov.uk/cancel-theory-test. Again, you’ll need to give three days’ notice if you want to get a refund.

Warning!

Don’t be fooled into paying for your theory test through a third party. There’s no benefit, and they could charge you up to three times the original price. Learning to drive is expensive enough already!

What happens if I lose my test confirmation email?

When you sign up for a theory test, You receive a confirmation email detailing the time of your test and the address of the test centre booked. You won’t need to show the booking confirmation on the day of the test; this is just for your information.

If you can’t find the email, you can quickly check your test details.

The 12-month rule

Bear in mind that, to book the theory test, you will need to have lived in the UK for at least 185 days in the twelve months before you take the test.

Booking your theory test by phone

If you like, you can also book your driving theory test by phone because you don’t have an email address, are having trouble booking online or have any other special requirements.

Booking your theory test in Northern Ireland

Residents of Northern Ireland will need to use a separate service for booking their theory test. This can be found here.

Applying for a theory test as a foreign national

You don’t need to be a UK national to take the theory test. You will simply need a UK provisional licence.
