Hi, my name is Emily and I’m learning to drive…follow my blog as I learn to drive!
I’ve recently turned seventeen and there were 2 things I had wished for:
- Provisional driving licence
- Driving lessons
Lucky girl that I am, I received both!
To top it all, my driving lessons would be in a little red mini, the car I had always wanted.
Using Dad’s car…!
Before my first lessons I asked my dad if he would take me for a couple of pre-lessons in his car. So one early Sunday morning we headed of to a nearby trading estate. After carefully selecting a quiet car parking area large enough for me to take the wheel, dad began to go through the controls. One bit of advice I would give all 15 / 16 year olds is to start paying attention to what mum or dad are doing when they are driving. Ask questions. This will definitely make that first pull away a lot easier.
After stalling a couple of times, I started to get the hang of things. We went out a few more times before deciding I was ready to take to the road!
My first driving lesson
I was extremely nervous for my first driving lesson. I was picked up from home and driven to a quiet area nearby where my driving instructor pulled over and went through all the essential controls of the car. She told me how to use the clutch to control a pull away, as well as the gears, and how to adjust my seat and mirrors. Although I was still quite apprehensive, my instructor assured me I would be fine, and I was finally ready to pull away. Driving was quite strange at first, but after a few minutes, I really started to get the hang of being in control of the car, and actually started to enjoy it. While we were driving around, my instructor went through how to control the steering wheel, and when to change gear.
After driving for about 45 minutes, I pulled over and my instructor drove me back home.
At the end of the lesson, I was given a record card, where my progress from that lesson was recorded. Once I was back home, I realised how much I enjoyed the experience of driving for the first time, and that there was nothing to worry about.
I can’t wait for my next lesson! Catch up with me soon!
See ya. Emily xx
