Stay on the right route – and the right side of the law

Did you know that using a handheld mobile phone while driving is illegal? Texting your mates (or answering that call from your Mum) could net you three points on your licence, plus an instant fine of £100. Worse still, this could rise to £1,000 if you’re taken to court. The most recently published figures show that in 2012, more than 92,000 drivers were fined for using a phone at the wheel.

Giving your full attention to the road is essential for all drivers, regardless of their level of experience. If you don’t know the roads you’re taking, minimising distractions is even more important.

For our latest competition, Young Car Driver are giving away a Garmin nuvi 2597LMT sat nav, worth £189. It includes full maps of the UK and Europe, plus live traffic updates to steer you away from the jams. Unlike your typical sat nav, this one also boasts Bluetooth. Simply connect it to your smartphone, and you’ll be able to make and receive calls while you drive – all while staying on the right side of the law.

My driving peeve is people who hog the middle lane, who drive way too close to the car infront of them, people who weave in and out of lanes hoping to be quicker.
