Top 10 First Time Cars

Here we look at our Top 10 cars for young or first time drivers.

10. Citroën C2

Used Prices start at: £500 (but will probably be +100,000 miles)
Euro NCAP crash test rating: 4 stars
Lowest insurance group: 1

Sales in the UK began in  2003 and continued until 2009 when the model was discontinued. The C2 is a small compact hatchback popular with first time and younger drivers. Citroën sold many brand new units with free insurance.

Small, light and economical the C2 was awarded 4 stars in the ENCAP crash rating and 3 stars for child safety.

9. VW Lupo

Used Prices start at: £595
Euro NCAP crash test rating: 4 stars
Lowest insurance group: 5

The tiny Lupo offers a premium package of reliability, driveability and desirability. The GTi models are mischievous and especially fun to drive with the six-speed gearbox. Main criticisms are the 1.0-litre and 1.7 Di diesels can feel underpowered and the boot is too small for most needs. It has a 4 star NACP rating and lowest insurance group is 5 for the 1.0 E 3d version.

8. Toyota Yaris

Used Prices start at: £590.00
Euro NCAP crash test rating: 4/5 stars
Lowest insurance group: 5

This is the third generation of the Toyota Yaris and the Japanese company believes it is so good that it will take sales from the class-leading Ford Fiesta. That’s a bold claim. Previously the Yaris has majored in bulletproof reliability, a spacious well-built cabin, a strong range of economical engines and low running costs. Add to this sharper styling and some of the best residuals in the class and it should do well. Toyota added the Hybrid version in mid-2012 to give the Yaris lower emissions and the opportunity of electric-only running for short periods in town. This means the Yaris is the only supermini on sale with the choice of petrol, diesel or hybrid power. It has a 4 star ENCAP rating for pre 2005 models and 5 stars since 2005 and the lowest insurance group is 5 for the 1.0 VVT-i T2 3d version.

7. Renault Clio

Prices start at: £10,795
Euro NCAP crash test rating: 4/5 stars
Lowest insurance group: 7

This car has always been a firm favourite with young car drivers. Excellent build quality, far exceeding previous models with the usual 5 star NCAP rating (post 2005) that goes with the Renault badge. The lowest insurance group we could find was 5 for the 1.2 Campus 3d version.
